Wall packs

One of the most common commercial lighting products is wall packs. Basically these can be better defined as a comprehensive unit that contains a low wattage or high beam bulbs encased in aluminum housing along with the required power cables. You may have seen these in and around commercial complexes, outside homes and even within industrial units. The main factor that goes in favor of wall packs is the fact that they are durable, economical and have low energy consumption and require little maintenance.

 

Outdoor and indoor lighting needs

Originally used only for commercial spaces and industrial application such as flood lights, street lights and other wallpacks, they have made a big entry into the outdoor residential market. Numerous homes use wall packs to illuminate the front doors, backyards and even the kitchen. As these are easy to install and the bulbs or tubes are fitted inside cast aluminum housing, these are fitted on the sides or back for mounting on walls.

Though they cannot replace stylish and artistic lighting fixtures, wall packs are usually classed as utility lighting fixtures. Additionally, wall packs can be seen in cafeterias, school corridors, shopping malls and even as wet location emergency signs in buildings. The high output with little input of energy makes these best illumination solutions for security and safety requirements.

Installing wall packs

To avoid wrong installations and unwanted beam directions it is best to install it properly. Most of the wall packs are designed and manufactured to produce high beam outputs so correct installations are important. If you intend installing 2 or more wall packs together, ensure that there is a considerable distance between the two wall packs. Most illumination experts recommend at least 25 feet to 35 feet distance for maximum uniformity in light fields.

Additionally, installing the wall packs at a height of 12 to 18 feet above the ground levels ensures the correct placement of wall packs will ensure optimum brightness and illumination in the complete area. However, before any of the wall packs are installed, consult the building regulators and officials to ensure that building safety codes are not violated.

Bulbs in wall packs

Most of the wall packs use the standard 175 watts metal halide bulb that produces high intensity white light assisting the surveillance cameras get better footage. So if you are looking at wall packs for better illumination and security, these work well. But if you are looking for wall packs for parking area and commercial building illumination, select the high pressure sodium bulbs, with gold-white light.

Most of the bulbs available for wall pack range from low 30 wattage florescent bulbs to the high intensity 400 watt high pressure sodium tubes. For softer lights, compact fluorescent models can suit the exteriors of apartment buildings and homes while being energy efficient.
