Comparing LED and other light fixtures

Perhaps one of the biggest differences between commercial LED wall packs and the types of residential lights most have seen is the type of lamps that are used. Incandescent lamps tend to be more common among the residential lighting fixtures while metal halide lamps and sodium lamps are more common for commercial applications. That said, there are some commercial LED wall packs and lighting fixtures that also use incandescent lamps. But their lifespan is short.

Types of lights

The types of lights used in commercial lighting applications can last as long as 50,000 hours, and in some cases even more. Incandescent lamps have a shorter lifespan, which means when they are used with commercial LED wall packs, they are usually for the wall packs that are used more for decoration that a significant source of security. Incandescent lights have warm colors whereas the metal halide and sodium lamps provide a whiter, brighter and harsher light. The average LED wall pack uses a type of fluorescent bulb. These bulbs work by activating phosphors through a mercury arc using ultraviolet energy.

Mounting LED wallpacks

These types of lights can be placed a variety of places, but there are some spots that are more ideal than others to put them. They are best put high up so that they can spread the widest distance to provide light to the biggest area possible. Other places wall packs work well include underneath building eaves or anyplace without too much open space. If an LED wall pack is put in an area with wide open spaces, like a park, it will be enclosed in a canopy to reduce the chance of the light output being diffused and diminished.

LED wall packs can also be available with HID bulbs. HID is an acronym for High Intensity Discharge which describes a technology that creates a bulb with an even more intense color. A simple way to describe the way these types of lights works is that they produce a bright light from the production of a gaseous arc discharged that is created using elements like high pressure sodium, mercury vapor or metal halide.
