The basic functioning and production of light is a chemical reaction that occurs inside the mercury vapor lamp. The electric current passing through the lamp indirectly creates a secondary current which accelerates the speed of the free electrons, leading to collision with mercury molecules. The electrons start orbiting in fixed orbits and start emitting UV radiation. This radiation in turn passes through the fluorescent coating of the lamp, leading to emission of light.
