Loading... Please wait...There are a variety of different types of gas lamps available on the market today. One type is the sodium vapor lamp. This type of lamp is a gas discharge lamp that uses, as the name implies, sodium to produce light.
They are available in two different types: low pressure or high pressure. High pressure sodium lamps used in a wall pack are often called HPS wall packs for short. To get a basic understanding of how HPS wall packs work, it is a good idea to take a brief look at sodium. Sodium is element number 11 on the chemical element chart many learned in high school. Its symbol is Na which is derived from the Latin word natrium.
When many people think of sodium, they think about salt. From a chemical definition, sodium is considered to be a reactive metal and member of the alkali metals. It’s a silvery white color and soft. There are different types of sodium. The types of sodium found in salt are easily soluble in water. The type of sodium used in lamps used in HPS wall packs is not the same type of sodium found in common table salt.
HPS wall packs are often considered to be a greener choice to commercial lighting because they use little energy and also cause less pollution than the comparable mercury vapor lamps. One of the biggest differences that can also cause the potential for increased expenses to business owners is the length of time each type of lamp lasts. High pressure sodium lamps can provide 50,000 or more hours of use. Mercury vapor lamps typically provide approximately 24,000 hours of light use.
HPS wall packs tend to be smaller than the wall packs used for low pressure sodium lamps. Unlike the low pressure lamps, high pressure lamps contain mercury which gives off a pink glow when first struck. This glow changes to an orange light with pink tones when warmed. During the warming up process, the light also briefly produces a bluish white light.
This variation in color in high pressure sodium lamps makes HPS wall packs an ideal choice in places where good color rendering is important. There is a no model of high pressure sodium bulb called the SON that is an even more accurate simulation of the rays produced by the sun. HPS lamps and wall packs can be used in greenhouses or by indoor gardeners because the wide color temperature spectrum produced is like the lights which help the plants grow.
HPS wall packs are also popular because they contain lights that are energy efficient. Even very high powered versions of 600 watts have an efficiency of 1500 lm per W. When the wattage is this high, the HPS wall packs are used mostly for security lighting and streetlights. They’re often used in streetlights because they provide better lighting for roads and their wide color spectrum makes them easier on human eyes.
