HID lamps are electrical and create a light from a reaction between gas and metal salts and an electric arc. The electric arc comes from the source of electricity and bounces around inside an arc tube filled with metal salts and gas. An intense heat is created that evaporates the metal salts to create plasma. The plasma creates a very bright visible light that uses less power than incandescent bulbs and even the more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
HID wall packs can accommodate a variety of different types of high intensity discharge lamps. The main types of HID lamps one might use in one of these wallpacks are xenon short-arc lamps, sodium vapor lamps, metal halide lamps, mercury vapor lamps and ceramic MH lamps. When a xenon arc lamp is used in an HID wall packs, it creates an intense white light that closely simulates natural sunlight. The lamp is a gas discharge lamp that creates the simulated sunlight by passing an electrical current through ionized xenon gas at high pressure. These types of lights are used in searchlights. Another good application, when used in an HID wall pack, is to light up the grounds of a large auto dealership.
Sodium vapor lamps excite sodium with electricity to create a light. This bulb causes less light pollution so is often used in commercial HID wall packs in cities with big astronomical observatories. HID wall packs that use metal halide lamps are common for use in places like football or other sports fields. These types of lamps produce a high level of light for their size. The lamps are available in a variety of different sizes and can accommodate HID wall packs for both residential and commercial applications.
Mercury vapor lamps have a long lifespan making them a popular choice in HID wall packs. They provide a clear white light that is suitable for factories and warehouses. It is also common to see these types of bulbs in streetlights.
Some HID wall packs can also accommodate ceramic discharge metal halide lamps. Like many HID lamps, these are energy efficient with a long lifespan. They are one of the newer forms of HID lamps that contain the light and electrical discharge in a ceramic tube. The ceramic tube contains the high temperature caused by electricity mixing with mercury, argon and metal halide salts. The HID wall packs that use ceramic discharge metal halide give off a bluish light with a color rendering index of up to 96 which is said to be close to daylight.
