Loading... Please wait...A CFL wall pack is a unit that houses compact florescent lamps (CFL). Sometimes these lights are also called compact florescent tubes or energy-saving light because they use much less energy to function than the traditional incandescent light does. Florescent lights are becoming more popular and advances in technology makes it easy to replace an incandescent lamp with a compact fluorescent.
These wall packs are popular among both in residences and businesses because they use less power to provide the same level of visible light that an incandescent lamp would provide. Depending on the CFL, the lamp can use one fifth to one third less power. And since the lamp uses less power, it also has a longer rated life. The average CFL will last eight to 15 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
The initial investment in a CFL wall pack will probably be higher than a similar unit with incandescent lights. Most find the investment worthwhile due to the savings. CFL can use up to five times less electricity than an incandescent bulb. One concern individuals may have regarding the use of a CFL wall pack is what to do with the compact fluorescents once they burn out, or if they become damaged. Like all fluorescents, CFL require a low amount of mercury in order to create light. Mercury in large enough quantities can pose health and environmental hazards. Disposal can sometimes be more complicated than the disposal of incandescent. Some areas have specific guidelines on how to dispose of CFL no longer used.
CFL wall packs have the capacity to carry a variety of bulbs. Advances in CFL means that the perceived color of light emitted by the bulb is much improved. This is mostly due to advances in phosphor formulations. It generally has two main components. An electronic ballast and a gas filled tube. The tube has a phosphorus coating because the light created from the chemical reaction between the inert gas and the tiny amount of mercury creates ultraviolet light. The phosphorus coating on the bulb acts like a filter to change the ultraviolet light from something invisible to something visible. Although CFL have progressed over the years, there are few that respond well to dimming. This is because the lamp current is stabilized and can’t be increased or decreased at will.
Compact fluorescent lights come in a variety of standard shapes. They include triple- turn, quad-turn, double helix, circular, butterfly and double-turn. It is possible to get a CFL wall pack to fit most of the standard shapes and types of compact florescent bulbs. The wall packs can also often accommodate any type of CFL light you would like. CFL are available in daylight, cool white, bright white, warm white, novelty colors (pink, orange), blue for photography and black light UV light.
